12 things we’ve learned in our first 12 months in the App Store

We’ve come a long way since we first brought a TruQC prototype to a coatings trade show. Since that time, our initial suspicions were confirmed: there’s a genuine need in the industrial coatings industry for a job-site documentation tool and quality control software that is efficient and easy-to-use.

We’ve learned a lot in our quest to meet that need. In fact, here are twelve lessons we’ve learned in our first twelve months in the app store.  We hope you enjoy reading them as much as we’ve enjoyed learning them.

1. Thank God we chose Apple

There’s a reason you see that half-eaten apple almost anywhere you go. Apple’s commitment to performance and usability, free from gimmicks, has made it the go-to tech tool for professionals who make their living with everything from a hammer to a scalpel. The brand, already synonymous with quality and simplicity, is constantly focused on refining and improving its products.

2. Forecast is cloudy…and we couldn’t be happier

Cloud-based data storage is heading the way of cable tv: ubiquitous, dependable and behind-the-scenes. That was the message from a panel of tech experts at a webinar hosted by Engineering News Record last week. Being able to access information, regardless of device, from anywhere in the world, is not a service that will fall by the wayside anytime soon.

3. The app is never complete

You may have heard we reached one million lines of code in our first year in the app store. So we can send the programmers home, right? Wrong. Our commitment to providing the best possible product knows no code limit. We’re continuously striving to expand the apps capabilities and streamline existing ones.

4. Listen to your customers — they’ll tell you what they want

No one knows your product better than the people who spend all day using it. So a model where customer feedback drives the production of your product is a recipe for success. Each product update incorporates that feedback into software that is continuously improving. This has been crucial to our development as both an app and as a company.

5. People like our product

When you pour your heart into something, there’s just nothing like being recognized for it. So we were proud when the industry magazine CoatingsPro named us the “Product of 2012.” And when Materials Performance gave us their “Innovation Award,” that was a good day. Being a Business Finalist for a Tabby Award? That felt pretty good, too.

6. All that matters is that customers are happy

Plain and simple. When your product is designed to make their work easier, the customer has the final say. And right now, they’re saying they’re happy — very, very happy.

7. A good team is essential

Surround yourself with good people and you’ll go far. Here at TruQC we’ve taken steps to ensure we’ve hired talented people that share our commitment to a high-quality product. Our success as a company is solely dependent on our strength as a team.

8. Press is priceless

The right coverage can single-handedly get a company off the ground. Being featured in industry mags like CoatingsPro, Durability + Design and Materials Performance helped get our name out there in a way that other means just can’t match.

9. Our product saves money

We ran the figures. We know that more than just making your industrial painting job easier, TruQC is a proven money saver. Download our free case study here to see how we crunched the numbers and just how high one company’s ROI was.

10. Seek the consult of industry leaders….we don’t know it all

There’s always going to be someone who’s been in the game longer than you. Know who they are. Listen. Learn. Repeat. There’s so much to learn.

11. Don’t listen to detractors, it is easy to stay in a comfort zone

Especially when you’re just starting out. Presenting new technologies to an industry is an easy way to bring the naysayers out of the woodwork, but change is inevitable. Being the agent of that change can be incredibly rewarding.

12.  It just keeps getting better, more fun, cleaner, more efficient and that keeps us hungry

During our first year, we put out a polished product we were pleased to have our names on. But the feeling of satisfaction that comes from being proud of the work you do has us hungry for more. Stay tuned for another twelve months of growth. We’ll be excited to update you on the progress!
